The NHS has once again recently hit the headlines for various reasons, one of them being the amount of paperwork which has to be completed for every patient receiving treatment. Not only is this time consuming for medical staff but also requires teams of administrative staff to input data from the paperwork and then file it away in the paper patient record.
With the advent of the Electronic Patient Record it is hardly surprising that the NHS have started to look at more efficient ways of managing patient related information and one of the solutions they have implemented is thedigital pen.
The digital pen works in exactly the same way as a traditional ballpoint pen except that it has a tiny camera in the nib which records the pen strokes and converts it into data. The paper the forms are printed on have a unique pattern of dots printed on them which are almost invisible to the naked eye and which the pen recognises. After completion of the form the data can then be instantly uploaded to an IT system or appended to an Electronic Patient Record if available.
As well as saving on admin costs, the fact that important information becomes available so soon after collection is a massive leap forward for the healthcare sector.
